Reducing elements of this composition to simplified shapes gives it a unique geometry but one that still reads as figures on a beach. To do this successfully, the painting needs to be carefully planned on paper before hand using a grid and freehand drawing. There is a tipping point at which any of the subjects cease to be discernible as figures so the skill lies in both editing their complexity at the same time as simplifying it.
